Four years after that, in 1711, Handel used the music again, this time for his London opera Rinaldo and its act 2 aria "Lascia ch'io pianga" ("Let me weep"), a heartfelt plea for her liberty addressed by the character Almirena to her abductor Argante. Rinaldo was a triumph, and it is with this work that the aria is chiefly associated. Rinaldo was Handel’s first Italian opera written for London, and indeed the first original Italian opera ever to be performed on the London stage. This is truly a bizarre, strange production of Handel's first opera for the london stage. First and foremost, the staging is incredibly confusing; I know this opera well and I was left trying to work out what was happening. You will feel like you're on a drug-fuelled journey through time and space, with many hallucinations along the way.

When George Frideric Handel’s Rinaldo premiered at the Metropolitan on January 14, 1984, it was the first opera by the renowned 18th-century composer to be performed by America’s premiere opera company. In this chivalrous saga, the crusader Rinaldo fights against the plotting of the magician Armida in order to rescue his beloved Almirena. Drawing his inspiration from an excerpt from the poem Jerusalem Delivered from La Tasse, the young Handel composed with Rinaldo his very first opera for the London public. It was an immediate success in a "Chrysander issued two scores of Rinaldo in the Händel-Gesellschaft edition, the second (1894), containing both the 1711 and 1731 versions, being a replacement of the first (1874) which contained only the 1711 version. Virtually all the music of 1711 and 1731 is included in the revised volume, though with deficiencies of detail (especially in the stage directions). Opera handel rinaldo

Rinaldo is Handel’s opera with the most hits and a firework of beautiful arias and stage effects. It is unbelievable that this opera was a Sleeping Beauty sleep for 200 years. Rinaldo, now also a captive, is brought before Armida. He angrily demands that Almirena be set free.

`Rinaldo' also contains the haunting "Lascia ch'io Pianga," a soprano aria recycled from Handel's own earlier `Almira.' At this opera's premiere, the tune proved so popular the Opera management posted a notice next day: "Whereas by the frequent calling of songs again, the opera has become too tedious . . . the singers are forbidden to sing a song above once!" Handel’s music follows the Italian opera style in Europe from the 1710s to about 1770, known as “opera seria”.
